Local Impact

Tee It Up for the Troops Wanakah (TIUW), a WNY golf tournament dedicated to honoring, remembering, respecting and supporting all those who serve(d) in the armed forces for this great nation, reached a new high in the event’s fundraising efforts with their 2019 event. According to event co-chair,Tom Waring, the September tournament surpassed all expectations.

“This was our third year producing Tee It Up for the Troops Wanakah and there were moments when it seemed we might fall short of this year’s goal. Yet thanks to the inspiring generosity of the businesses, organizations, and individuals throughout Western New York and the endless support of Wanakah Country Club, at the end of the tournament, we surpassed our goal in reaching a three-year total of $274,000—over a quarter of a million dollars- – given in support of national and local veterans, active military and their families. Certainly, it is a testament to the dedication of our community in honoring those who have given their lives for the safety and security of our great nation.”

WNY Section PGA Foundation, created with a goal of providing support to various organizations, including veterans, in the Buffalo, Rochester, Erie and Southern Tier through the game of golf.

Each organization received a check for $11,508 dollars, an amount Waring notes as close to a $1,000 dollar increase from checks that were distributed by TIUW the previous year.

“The Tee It Up for the Troops Wanakah Committee is grateful to the people of our community, who participated as sponsors, golfers, auction donors, and bidders, for their part in helping us increase the monies we were able to give to help our local veterans and their families. Erie County has the state’s second-highest veteran population, which is why our volunteer organizers are dedicated to continuing this tournament and increasingly raising funds to make a difference in their lives and the lives of their loved ones.”

Our History

Tee It Up for the Troops was founded in 2005 by the family and friends of a soldier serving in Iraq. When the son was asked what he needed, he responded by asking his father to do something for the returning service members and their families back home. Tee It Up for the Troops was established to honor that selfless request.

Since 2005, Tee It Up for the Troops has donated over $10,000,000 to veteran service organizations that provide critically needed services to help our veterans to heal, transition, grow and thrive. Tee It Up for the Troops targets its support across these critical areas of need:

  • Treatment of PTSD and Traumatic Brain Injuries: the hidden wounds of war
  • Suicide Awareness and Prevention: reducing veteran suicides
  • Employment: veteran unemployment rate is much higher than the national average
  • Sports and Recreation: both adaptive and rehabilitative
  • Family and Caregiver Support: strong family + strong caregiver = strong warrior
  • Housing: homelessness, plus transitional and comfort housing while receiving treatment

Together, we make a difference!
